Assessment of fruits during shelf-life storage using biospeckle laser CIGR Journal

Biospeckle is a phenomenon that interprets an optical pattern formed by illuminating a surface under changes with coherent light.  These patterns are usually analyzed by numerical as well as graphical methods.  Present work evaluated the application of different numerical methods to analyze biospeckle for the assessment of fresh mature fruits.  Quantitative first and second order moments namely Inertia moment (IM) and Absolute Values of Differences (AVD), based on the recording of time history of speckle pattern were used.  Results showed that during shelf-life storage of ten days of different fruits, the IM and AVD values were found to decrease.  In addition, to assess the impact of ripening of fruits on their optical properties, speckle grain size was...

Algumas das características especiais do laser associadas a fenômenos ópticos, permitem uma série de aplicações na área biológica, baseadas no fenômeno conhecido como "biospeckle". A técnica do biospeckle tem sido desenvolvida como uma ferramenta para análise da atividade de materiais biológicos, monitoramento de umidade, nível de atividade e presença de parasitos, dentre outros atributos. Abstract The classification and selection of agricultural products are very important to assure post-harvest quality processes. However, most of physical and chemical analyses are destructive. It means those products turn useless after these analyses. Moisture is one of the most important parameters to assure the storage quality and as well to facilitate product processing. Laser biosensor use for the microbial metabolic activity assessment of kefir vinegar PAB

Abstract: The objective of this work was to verify the use of a laser biosensor for the microbial metabolic activity assessment of kefir vinegar. Kefir grains were inoculated in apple must and were analyzed daily using the biospeckle technique. The initial biological activity was of 14.21 pixels per absolute value of differences (AVD). The biological activity of kefir grains decreased in the early days of fermentation and increased on the fourth day to 11.51 pixels per AVD; however, on the last day, the biological activity of kefir grains decreased to 7.12 pixels (alcoholic fermentation) and to 6.77 pixels per AVD (acetic fermentation). This new biospeckle methodology facilitates the microbiological control in fermentation processes.

Laser speckle techniques in quality evaluation of orange fruits AGRIAMBI

This work presents a study of a new technology applied in quality tests of oranges. Evaluations were performed using a nondestructive and noninvasive method based on the interpretation of an optical phenomenon that occurs when the fruit is illuminated with coherent light, referred as biospeckle. The speckle patterns of laser light scattered in orange fruits have been measured through their quantification. For the quantification of the variation by biospeckle, the autocorrelation function and the modified occurrence matrix were used.
